Should I Use an Automatic Cat Litter Box?

I remember thinking that an automatic litter box must be a waste of money. I didn’t have too much trouble scooping the box twice a day and keeping things clean. And then, my cat became diabetic and began peeing all the time. We were going though $100 worth of cat litter a week. While the cat was being treated for diabetes, I still needed to find a way to deal with the litter box while he was transitioning onto insulin and diet food.

I started looking at some automatic cat litter boxes. I began looking at ones like the Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box. This is a great, inexpensive litter box for people who are unable to or do not like to scoop the litter box. It scoops it out by itself and stores it under the box. Though this is a great box, it was not quite what I was looking for as I was still paying for all of the litter.

Soon after this, we found the CatGenie. ThisĀ automaticĀ litter box, though more expensive than some of the previous ones, was the one we ended up keeping. This is because the litter is reusable. They are plastic granules that only need to be replaced every six months or so. The box is connected to the toilet or the washing machine drain. When the cat pees in the box, is goes through the granules, through slits in the bottom and into a hold where they sit until the box runs. When the box runs, the urine is flushed into the toilet.

Although these are the reasons why we bought and kept the CatGenie, it does more too. It also disposes feces into the toilet. The other thing though, that sold me on it, is that every time you run it (which can be programmed), it cleans the entire box with antibacterial solution. You can program it to run every time the cat uses it, or a certain number of times a day, or you can have it simply run when you press the button. If you set it to “Cat” mode, allowing the box to run whenever the cat has used it, then it will have a ten hour sleep mode, meaning it will not run for ten hours a day allowing you to sleep!
